Kite Lake is one of my favorite areas to hike. You can access three 14ers from this trail head, Mt. Democrat, Mt. Cameron, and Mt. Lincoln. Beautiful mountain lake, streams and waterfalls. Take Colorado 9 to Alma. In the middle of town and on the west side of the road, look for a small sign for the road to Kite Lake. Turn here and drive a bit through a residential area. Continue 6 miles to Kite Lake. The last mile of this road can be a bit more rough, but a good-clearance 2WD should still be able to make it when the road is dry. There are restrooms and some camping spots at the trailhead. You must pay a $3 fee to park/camp at Kite Lake. If you park below, walk up the road to Kite Lake.

Through the heart of Alma lies the trailhead of 4 -14'ers! Kite Lake is a beautiful trip to just look around or get out and do an easy day Hike.

Kite Lake is a small, high elevation lake (12,000 feet) nestled in the mountains between Leadville and Alma. The lake is 12 miles away from the cabin and 5.5 mile drive along Buckskin Road northwest from Alma. The journey to Kite Lake offers scenic views of the nearby mountain peaks, wildflowers, and pieces of Colorado history like the Paris Mill. The area is known to offer good, alpine trout fishing among breathtaking views and is an extremely popular starting point to access many of the area’s 14ers. From the near water parking lot, hikers can access the summits of Mt. Democrat (14,148 ft), Mt. Cameron (14,238 ft.), Mt. Lincoln (14,286 ft.) and Mt. Bross (14,172), all in one day along the Kite Lake Loop. The day use area at Kite Lake has picnic tables and bathroom facilities available to use for a small fee
