The zoo is about 6 miles from the beach. Nestled within the undulating curves of the Magnolia River, the beautiful town of Magnolia Springs developed from a Spanish land grant in the year 1800 and, by the end of the War Between the States, rapidly became a primary destination for the families and descendants of many of the soldiers who had fought on both sides. Families from Vermont, Chicago, St. Louis and other points north built homes, inns, and businesses along the river’s edge and were joined by native Alabamians and transplants from other Southern locations.
At the turn of the century, the water from the many natural springs along both sides of the river was declared “the purest in the world” by several chemical companies in Chicago. The community’s name comes from the ever-flowing springs and the abundance of aged magnolia trees that grace every residential garden. A majestic canopy of giant oak trees lines the hamlet’s streets as well as a variety of exquisite camellias, and, in spring, the highways and byways of Magnolia Springs become a bower of azalea, wisteria, dogwood, and magnolia blossoms.
Central to this community is the river — today the Magnolia River remains the only river route mail delivery in the continental United States. Quaint boathouses grace each shore, water birds swoop and dive, and the river banks are lush with wildlife and greenery. In decades past, the river was the “highway” for all commerce and communication, with steamers, sailboats and paddle wheelers connecting the river’s residents with the outside world.

Our founders settled on the high bluff where they bought clear-cut wasteland for $5.50 per acre. They thought using the Single Tax plan would give them at least a "fair hope" of succeeding. Thus, the Fairhope Single Tax Colony was founded, attracting supporters and financial backers from around the country and drawing an eclectic assemblage of industrious, creative and free-thinking people to Fairhope, Alabama.
The City of Fairhope was established with around 500 residents in 1908, taking over responsibility for all municipal services. In the 1930s, the city became the caretaker of Fairhope's greatest assets, the beachfront park, the park lands on the bluff above the beach, Henry George Park, Knoll Park, and the quarter-mile long pier, all gifts of the Single Tax Colony, which continues to have an active presence in the city to this day.

Doug and I ate here during one of our visits and truly experienced the most amazing meal either one of us has ever had! The experience is wonderful, as well as learning more about this little town. We recommend the beet salad, the steaks, and you can never go wrong with the sea food!

In recovery from that life-changing storm, husband & wife - Erich & Jennifer found an opportunity to turn a blighted corner store into a vibrant gathering place where neighbors could enjoy excellent Breakfast, Lunch & Brunch fare in a casual and inviting atmosphere. The Ruby Slipper Cafe Mid-City was an instant success due to its inviting nature & innovative brunch & morning cocktail selections.
In December 2010, Ruby Slipper Cafe Downtown (200 Magazine Street in the CBD) opened and has become a popular destination for tourists, business people and local residents alike. In November 2012, Ruby Slipper Cafe proudly added its Marigny location at 2001 Burgundy Street followed by the opening of the Canal location in the French Quarter in early 2014. In July 2015, Ruby Slipper Cafe opened its first location outside of New Orleans, located in Downtown Pensacola, Florida and then it added to the gulf region by opening Orange Beach, Al location in June 2016. In early 2017 the cafe added a fifth restaurant to the New Orleans group in the Uptown, La area followed by a Baton Rouge, La location in summer 2017. Late that same year the Ruby Slipper transitioned the original location in Mid-City, New Orleans to a larger building that took two years of historical renovation. It now serves as the flagship location and home of the corporate headquarters. In 2018, the Ruby Slipper has opened two new locations in Downtown Mobile, Al and one in the historic French Quarter of New Orleans.
