City/town information
Evergreen’s origins date back to 1859 when a closely-knit group of families settled here and formed a ranching community. During the late nineteenth century, due to its proximity to Denver, city residents increasingly came up the hill to build summer homes and hunting cabins. After the dam was built and the reservoir filled in 1928 creating Evergreen Lake, the area increased in popularity.
Downtown, often referred to as “The Heart of Evergreen”, is still a place where city residents come “up the hill” for a day in the mountains. Just 30 minutes from Denver, downtown Evergreen is an easy, refreshing day trip.
Our walkable downtown district extends from the Evergreen Lakehouse, around the Evergreen Lake, along Main Street to Bear Creek and Highland Haven Creekside Inn and up Meadow Drive as far as Hiwan Homestead Museum. While summer weekends and holidays can be quite lively with lots of visitors, there are many areas available to park your car and walk through downtown.
Parking is available at the Lakehouse, on Plettner Lane, downtown, and at the Hiwan Museum and the old Hiwan Barns by Mountain Home. Please check our event calendar to find out if there are special events at any of these locations.

Evergreen

Echo Lake Park is a park located along the Mount Evans Scenic Byway about 9 miles from our Mountain Loft. The park provides a stone shelter with picnic tables and barbecue grills on one end of the lake, and the 1926 Echo Lake Lodge and an Arapaho National Forest campground are found at the other.

Many locals consider Idaho Springs the perfect stop off when I-70 traffic backs up. and you might recognize the Charlie Taylor Waterwheel, which you can see right from the highway on the east-bound side. A walk around town shows the numerous buildings that have been preserved — though most now have different uses than what they were originally. There are plenty of quality restaurants in Idaho Springs, including the popular Tommyknocker Brewery and Beau Jo's Colorado Style Pizza. After your meal, stroll the affordable souvenir shops to pick up gifts for the folks back home (and some locally made candies for yourself).
