Historical

Come visit the beautiful LSU Campus. Take a walk to see Death Valley, Mike the Tiger, and the historical magnolias. In the famous words of Dan Borne: It is a pantheon of concrete and steel. It is a city that rises defiantly in the delta alongside the father of waters. It is the humidity of autumn evenings that drapes stately oaks and broad magnolias. It is haunted ... and it is loud. It is Halloween night and Cannon blasts. It is a Louisiana gumbo of humanity that cheers its Tigers to victory And destroys the dreams of invading foes. The chance of rain is ... never! It is the cathedral of college football, And worship happens here, when the sun finds its home in the western sky. It is a field of glory for sure... But much more than that, it is a sacred place. And it is Saturday night in Death Valley..

Food scene

This place is a 3 minute walk from the house. They have excellent pizzas, many of which have a southern twist. They serve alcoholic beverages, including local wines and beer. With prices that won’t break the bank, this is our go to if we want something quick and enjoyable!

Mexican food with some Cajun influence. The margaritas are amazing (and strong). Happy hour is 3-6:30pm. Patio seating is first come first serve. The restaurant is busy most days, so arrive early or be prepared to wait.

My favorite Louisiana seafood restaurant! You have to try the chargrilled oysters (trust me). A full bar and tons of Cajun options make this a regular go to for Baton Rouge natives!

There are many bridges that cross the Mississippi, the one in downtown Baton Rouge is the newest and most crowded. You can see it from many restaurants, while taking a walk on the levee, and while driving down I-10/I-110.

Rainy, hot, & humid

Summers are hot, humid, and rainy. Bring an umbrella, rain jacket, and water proof shoes (or shoes you don’t mind getting wet/muddy).

Louisiana sunsets

Take a drive to the levee in downtown Baton Rouge and watch a sunset on a clear or partly cloudy evening. The views are spectacular!

Louisiana “slang”

A “buggy” is a shopping cart. People get “down” from the car and “save” the dishes/groceries. A pasta strainer is a “colander.” Lunch is called “supper,” but dinner is dinner. A “suicide lane” is the lane in the middle of the two opposite sides of traffic - you should use this or you won’t get anywhere in Baton Rouge. I don’t know what they are called elsewhere, but if you’re around in the summer, make sure to grab a “snowball” - tigers blood is an excellent flavor! We have “parishes” instead of counties (our home is in East Baton Rouge Parish - EBR).
