St. Ambrose Catholic Church is located in The Hill Neighborhood of St. Louis, Missouri. The parish was established to service the many Italian Roman Catholics that had immigrated to the St. Louis area to work on the Frisco and Missouri-Pacific Railroads between 1853 and 1890. The original frame church for the new parish was built in 1903 but was destroyed by fire in 1921. The current Lombard Romanesque Style brick church was completed in 1926.

About 10 minutes east of the St. Louis Museum of Art and 12 minutes west of the Gateway Arch. The Cathedral Basilica is a perfect stop for tourists seeking a break from the noise and monotony of the world. The Cathedral Basilica of Saint Louis is a cathedral named for Saint Louis. It was designated a basilica by Pope John Paul II in 19971. The cathedral was built as a replacement for the previous Saint Louis Cathedral, now the Basilica of Saint Louis, King of France, located along the Mississippi River. Archbishop John Glennon began building this beautiful cathedral in 1907 with a groundbreaking ceremony and it wasn't officially completed until 1987. Its unique design combines architecture of the Romanesque style on the exterior with an amazingly beautiful Byzantine-style interior.

Neighborhoods

Just blocks from your rental, a walk to some of our favorite places on the hill are just steps away. To many St. Louisans, “The Hill” is an Italian neighborhood known for its nationally acclaimed restaurants, specialty groceries and bakeries, tiny “shotgun” houses and fire hydrants proudly painted green, white and red, the colors of the Italian flag. Yet this image just touches the surface, for this 50 square block area in South St. Louis is not merely one of the city’s few ethnic neighborhoods, but among its most stable, tightly woven communities. Though the Hill is no longer the isolated enclave it once was, it has retained a loyalty and cohesiveness that goes beyond the fire hydrants, the annual Columbus Day parade, and the many popular restaurants and specialty stores that dot the neighborhood. This is still a place where childhood friends meet for lunch, where most people know all of their neighbors and where businesses have been operated by the same families for generations. While the Hill retains is historic ethnic character it welcomes newcomers and visitors as a vital part of its continuity.

It's not an overstatement to call the South Grand Dining District the most diverse strip of restaurants in St. Louis. Within a stretch of six blocks just shy of Tower Grove Park, you can find Turkish kebabs, Vietnamese pho, Ethiopian injera and Thai papaya salad – just to name a few. In addition to offering a veritable trip around the globe, the neighborhood also boasts some of the city's best vegan and vegetarian fare, including barbecue jackfruit tacos and New York-style slices made with cashew cheese.

Southwest Garden is a south St. Louis neighborhood bound by I-44 and McRee Avenue to the north, Tower Grove Park, the Missouri Botanical Gardens and South Kingshighway to the east, Scanlan Avenue and Connecticut Street to the south, Hampton Avenue to the west and Columbia/Southwest Avenues to the north and east: The neighborhood is situated next to the Italian neighborhood The Hill. But make no mistake, Southwest Garden has it’s own identity, especially nearest the Missouri Botanical Garden. Your rental is less than 2 miles to the Botanical Gardens. A few of our favorite restaurants are just walking distance from us. Amigo Joe's is a Mexican restaurant just one block up. Three blocks away on Hampton is a great Greek restaurant named Ari's. Our new favorite burger place is Soha on Hampton. They added an upper deck that overlooks the neighborhood, and they have the best burger around. There are also 2 great neighborhood bars. Ryan's Corner is one block up at Southwest Ave and 59th St. If you make a left there you walk down another block to the Hideaway. Both are awesome places to go where the locals go and be treated as such.

One hundred and seven years after Amighetti's first opened on Daggett Avenue on the Hill, a brand new location has opened at Southwest and Macklind avenues. Just a few short city blocks from us its a nice walk or a very short drive. The Amighetti Special is at the heart of the menu. The roast beef, salami and ham sandwich with special sauce is made the same as it was back in the 1960s when Marge Amighetti invented it herself. Current Amighetti's owner Anthony Favazza credits Marge with turning Amighetti's into what it is today by convincing her husband, Louis Amighetti, who inherited the original bakery, to start selling sandwiches, the recipes for which Marge crafted herself. This is definitely a favorite of ours. They also sell Hank's Cheesecake for all of us that love the sweets! Enjoy!

ust a couple miles from your rental, Mama's is our favorite Italian restaurant on The Hill. One of the staples of The Hill is Mama, perhaps one of the most famous and historic restaurants in Saint Louis. Home of the toasted ravioli, Mama's has become a landmark of The Hill and its Italian neighborhoods. In the early 1940s, a chef by the name of Fritz accidently dropped an order of ravioli into hot oil instead of hot water. Quickly realizing his mistake, the raviolis were removed but not discarded. Mickey Garagiola, older brother of Major League Baseball Hall-of-Famer Joe Garagiola, was actually at the bar during the mishap and was the first to taste the accidental treat. With some seasoning, everyone agreed that toasted ravioli was a hit and there to stay. Word quickly spread and soon other restaurants in the area started making their own versions. Toasted ravioli exploded in popularity and was soon served nationwide, although its home is on The Hill.
