I thought a sushi bar in Canon City would be the worst ever. Surprise! It's very good compared to anything in a large city. Owner is Korean, but food is available across a variety of Asian cuisines. I have never had a bad meal there. Ambiance is nice.

Excellent fresh food and very fast service. Surprised they can do both. Very budget friendly. Nice atmosphere, family-owned and operated. Try the flan!

Open end of May through September near Royal Gorge. They have a great menu including smoked bbq, great beer on tap, karioke on certain nights, dining inside and al fresco, a play area for kids, and fires table-side with outdoor seating. It's a really fun place.

Their menu isn't as varied as Whitewater (next door) but it is very good. Seating faces the Royal Gorge - so nice view. Good service.
Like the Whitewater Bar and Grill they are open mid-May through September.

I never fail to find something that I really love. Ouch to my wallet, but the prices are actually very good and often a bargain.

This 4WD road is the old stage coach route between Canon City and Cripple Creek during the gold rush that pulled billions of dollars out of the mines in the Cripple Creek area. The drive is majestic and beautiful. You could drive it in a front wheel drive vehicle, but I wouldn't recommend it.

The drive is majestic and beautiful. You could drive it in a front wheel drive vehicle, but I wouldn't recommend it.
This 4WD only. I have seen a variety of wildlife on this drive including Rocky Mountain Big Horn Sheep. There is also a 'window' in the mountains - just a square clear through a mountain ridge. Really spectacular in the afternoon when the sun shines through. This road comes out in Cripple Creek.

Shelf RoadThis 4WD only. I have seen a variety of wildlife on this drive including Rocky Mountain Big Horn Sheep. There is also a 'window' in the mountains - just a square clear through a mountain ridge. Really spectacular in the afternoon when the sun shines through. This road comes out in Cripple Creek.
County Road 2, aka Tallahassee Road, off of Highway 9, goes through to Salida, but also has a fork that will take you to Cotopaxi on Hwy 50. Both are very scenic routes and some of my favorite drives. These are not for the acrophobic and I recommend 4wd, but they are passable in 2wd if you are willing to drive slowly. These are spectacular in every season. The road through to Salida is not maintained in the winter.

Tallahassee TrailCounty Road 2, aka Tallahassee Road, off of Highway 9, goes through to Salida, but also has a fork that will take you to Cotopaxi on Hwy 50. The road through the canyons involves an elevation change from 5,330 feet at Canon City to 9,395 feet at Cripple Creek (a nice drive when tired from climbing). It is a dirt road, but easy, and passable with 2 WD vehicles. Shelf Road is home to many quality sport climbing routes, vertical limestone and is well known as one of the best climbing sites in Colorado. A sport climber's mecca with nearly 1000 routes on bombproof pocketed limestone. Routes vary from 5.7- 5.13 mostly bolted routes. There are two camping locations at Shelf Road. The lower area, Sand Gulch has 14 campsites and 1 group camping site. The upper area at The Banks has 33 campsites and 2 group camping sites. Just before you arrive at Shelf Road, you will pass Sand Gulch campground on your left. This is quality, spacious camping and access to the Sand Gulch area, home to many moderates climbs about a 15 minute walk from the campground. There is day use parking at the northwest end of the campground, and overflow parking at the north end, where the Free form trail begins. Shelf Road also has ample-sized trailhead parking for equestrians with corrals. Adventurous anglers can hike to Fourmile creek for fishing. Hiking and hunting are popular in the area as well as a short drive on a 4X4 loop trail. For more information, please contact the Royal Gorge Field Office. There is much public information available.
