Parks, Trails, and Springs

Get lost in true Florida! See the natural beauty of the land & the wildlife that inhabits it. For a comprehensive list and explanation of Florida's aquifers and springs, visit https://www.kingsofthesprings.com/. We've taken care to provide a small picnic tote, beach towels, and pool noodles for soaking! For hikes, feel free to spray some Off Insect Repellent. Be mindful of ticks in the forest.
Paynes Prairie is unique in many ways. Nowhere else in Florida can visitors experience wild-roaming bison and horses. Nearly 300 species of birds also frequent the park along with alligators, deer and many other animals. The park’s eight trails, including the 16-mile paved Gainesville-Hawthorne State Trail, allow one to explore the park’s interior and observe wildlife, while a 50-foot high observation tower provides for panoramic views. Fishing and canoeing on Lake Wauberg are popular along with a shaded campground. During a visit to Paynes Prairie, one can easily understand why Seminole Indians once occupied a village along this vast savannah. Entrance Fee: $6.00 per vehicle Learn more: https://www.floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/paynes-prairie-preserve-state-park

In the midst of North Florida's sandy terrain and pine forests, a bowl-shaped cavity 120 feet deep leads down to a miniature rain forest. Small streams trickle down the steep slopes of the limestone sinkhole, disappearing through crevices in the ground. Lush vegetation thrives in the shade of the walls even in dry summers. Researchers have learned a great deal about Florida's natural history by studying fossil shark teeth, marine shells and the fossilized remains of extinct land animals found in the sink. Visitors can enjoy picnicking and learn more about the sinkhole through interpretive displays. Entrance Fee: $4.00 per vehicle Learn more: https://www.floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/devils-millhopper-geological-state-park

Cactus Jacks Trail Rides offers guided horseback trail riding for individuals, families, and large groups of up to 30 riders! 365 days a year, 7 days a week even holidays from two different locations in Central Florida. The Marjorie Harris Carr Cross Florida Greenway One of the nation's largest incomplete public works projects has been transformed into the diverse Cross Florida Greenway, spanning Central Florida from the Gulf of Mexico to the St. Johns River. The Cross Florida Greenway is unique in many ways. Occupying more than 70,000 acres of land formerly known as the Cross Florida Barge Canal, the Greenway is a 110-mile linear park that is more than a mile wide in places. It hosts more than 300 miles of trails of all types — paddling, hiking, mountain biking, equestrian and paved multi-use. Black bears use the Greenway as a major corridor, especially on the eastern end near the Ocala National Forest. The Greenway protects unspoiled segments of the Ocklawaha River and it offers campgrounds, too. All this and more are part of the Cross Florida Greenway experience! Alexander Springs Recreation Area is located in the Ocala National Forest near the beautiful, turquoise waters of Alexander Springs. With forested scenery and abundant water, the recreation area offers camping, swimming, canoeing, scuba diving (for certified divers), hiking, birding and wildlife viewing. The Ocala National Forest, located in north central Florida, spans four counties and 383,000 acres. It is the southernmost and oldest national forest east of the Mississippi River, and protects the world's largest contiguous sand pine scrub forest. Alexander Springs is among 27 first-magnitude springs in Florida, and is by far one of the easiest for visitors to enjoy. The water is a constant 72 degrees and extraordinarily clear with a sandy bottom. The area is subtropical, surrounded by a floodplain forest of maples, sweet gum and cabbage palms. Alligators, turtles, deer, raccoons, black bear and numerous birds make their home in the national forest. Visitors can swim, snorkel and dive year-round in the crystalline waters of the spring. The spring is the only place in the Ocala National Forest where scuba diving is permitted, and a broad and naturally gently sloped spring pool becomes a natural water park where visitors can picnic, swim and play. Fishing and canoeing are popular outside the swimming area. Anglers can bring a rod and reel and head down to one of the platforms along the Timucuan Trail to drop a line in Alexander Run. Visitors can rent canoes or bring their own and paddle down Alexander Run into the Alexander Springs Wilderness. Day hikers will appreciate a short interpretive trail on a boardwalk over the spring and through the palm trees. They can also access two segments of the 1,400-mile Florida National Scenic Trail, which runs through the entire national forest.

Visitors to this old Florida homestead can walk back in time to 1930s farm life when Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings lived and worked in the tiny community of Cross Creek. Her cracker style home and farm, where she wrote her Pulitzer Prize-winning novel "The Yearling" and other wonderful works of fiction, has been restored and is preserved as it was when she lived here. The park is open every day and interior guided tours of the farmhouse are available Thursday through Sunday at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. Be sure to pick up a color brochure of the farmhouse on your way in at the honor fee kiosk just outside the entrance gate. Picnic facilities, a boat ramp to Orange Lake, and a playground are located in the adjacent county park. Before you come, you might enjoy picking up a copy of one of Marjorie Rawlings's books and use her words to travel back to frontier Florida – and then come see us at the park and explore her farmyard, grove, seasonal garden and trails. Her book about her life here, "Cross Creek," will take you directly back to life on this land and in this community. Rawlings was honored as a First Floridian by then-Governor Charlie Crist in March 2009. The U.S. Postal Service released a commemorative stamp in 2008 honoring Rawlings and the literary arts. In 2007, the Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings house and farmyard was designated as a National Historic Landmark, our nation’s highest historic recognition. We’ve mentioned our geocache in several places and included a warning about the sprinklers. This has both amused and sometimes confused our geo-seeking visitors. Yes, we have a hidden box in the farmyard area that is fun to find. Check out the Geo-seeking page before you come so you too can find our geocache. We are proud to have been visited and liked by many! Entrance Fee: $3.00 per group Learn More: https://www.floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/marjorie-kinnan-rawlings-historic-state-park

Is it The Cliffs that make The Canyons the most sensational adventure park in Florida? Or maybe it’s the Zips at 155 feet high and 1,150 feet long. Or maybe it’s the kayaking on spring fed lakes? Or maybe it’s the mountain-like elevation changes on horseback, or soaking up the breathtaking scenery and wine on our historical tasting tours….or maybe it’s the fact that none of this should exist in Florida, but it does, and it’s ONLY HERE, at THE CANYONS ZIP LINE & ADVENTURE PARK! Antonio, born in Ponza, Italy has brought authentic Italian to North Florida. Antonio and his wife are proud to be the owners of the old Harvest Village located between the scenic towns of Micanopy and McIntosh. The property has 4 historical buildings that were relocated to site around 1978 or so the story goes. There is an old citrus packing house, built in 1890 and relocated from Citra. A staged gas station whose original building is from the 1890’s sits next to the packing house. Antonio’s fine dining restaurant is located in an old “cracker” house that was built in 1925 and relocated from up on the hill behind the property. And perhaps the most interesting is the old train station that was built in 1881 and relocated from Reddick that houses their sports bar and speakeasy. Antonio and Arleen continue to take great care in preserving the historical relevance while creating unique venues. It is a short relaxing drive through Payne’s Prairie, with no traffic or driving around looking for a parking space. Reservations recommended! See Menu, hours, and directions: https://www.antonios.co/
