Sightseeing

Ahhh, good old Cleveland! So you're in town or are planning to visit in the future? The City of Cleveland (proper) is the largest city in Cuyahoga County. But most of the time when Cleveland is referenced in a global or a national context, it broadly encompasses the Northeast Ohio region. So, when you see Patterson Fruit Farm, or Amish country around Middlefield, or Punderson State Park in this guide, yes, they are technically not in Cleveland, but I would consider them to be a part of our region's identity. There is a lot to see and even more to do in our area, for all kinds of people. I've been here for the better part of 40 years, and there are new places I find on a regular basis. This guide was started in late fall of 2019, so it is, and will be, a work in progress for a long time. I hope you find it useful.

Over 23,000 acres in 18 reservations make up what is sometimes referred to as Cleveland’s “Emerald Necklace.” It is called that because if viewed on a map they appear as a green chain around the city. The closest parks to the house within the system are Euclid Creek Reservation, Acacia Reservation, and North Chagrin Reservation. (Admission is Free) The Cleveland Zoo is part of the Metroparks system, but there is a charge for admission.

This has been a recreational destination for me and my family for more than 30 years. This 700+ acre state park is about 20 miles from the house and offers primitive tent camping, full-hookup camping with electric, water and sewer on one side of Punderson Lake. On the other side is a stately manor with guest rooms and restaurant, as well as several 2-bedroom cabins. There are many hiking trails, an archery site, a winter-time tubing hill with a mechanical lift, a golf course, and of course excellent fishing. There is a marina with a launching dock, and you can rent row-boats and buy bait - usually nightcrawlers, wax worms, and minnows. Over the years, I've caught many rainbow trout, one golden trout, lots of channel catfish, largemouth bass, black crappie, and many types of panfish. This place is truly a gem!

Part of Cleveland's "Emerald Necklace" it offers some of the best views of downtown Cleveland from the west side. Features a fishing pier, picnic areas with grills, a playground, and a beach. Don't be surprised to see surfers in full-body suits riding the Lake Erie waves in the winter time (when the lake's not frozen.)

The original restaurant located on St. Clair Avenue is known for having the biggest and best Corned Beef sandwiches in town. This location is open only until 2:00 pm during the week, and closed on the weekends. During lunch, lines can stretch out the door, down the street and around the corner – and there’s a good reason for that.

Years before healthful food was “cool,” Aladdin’s was serving up fresh and delicious Middle Eastern cuisine. From the first Aladdin’s that opened 25 years ago, to the more than 30 locations now in Northeastern Ohio, it serves hands-down the best hummus in town. Closest locations to the house are on Cedar Road in Cleveland Heights, and on SOM Center Road in Mayfield Village.

If you don’t like old-school, hole-in-the-wall places to eat, this is not for you. It is at the Shaker Square RTA station, so you can people-watch as they get on and off the train to downtown. The menu is classic blue-collar Cleveland, and the prices, well you’ll have a hard time finding a better value for your hard-earned dollar.

Located in Cleveland's little Asia district, it can be accessed from Payne Avenue or from the Park2Shop parking lot entrance. The old ladies bring dim sum to your table, but you will have to point to what you want as almost none of them speak English. Food is authentic, delicious, and not too expensive. It is patronized by a lot of Asians, so I know it's close to how it is back in the homeland(s).

About 30 miles from the house, Szalay's Farm & Market is located in our national park. Yes, we have a national park! It's called Cuyahoga Valley National Park, and it's the only National Park in the state of Ohio. Best time to visit this place is in the summer, and ideally on a Saturday morning, so you can stop by the Countryside Farmer's Market just down the road. Szalay's is known for it's corn, although they do sell a variety of produce.
