Sovalye Island is located about 15 minutes from the coast and the town of Fethiye, and is entirely pedestrian. Its paths are lined with bougainvillea, pine and lemon trees and with no roads or traffic, the island is a dream destination for a quiet and pleasant holiday. The island is very small, a walk from one end of the island to the other is 45 minutes or so, along a coastline dotted with ancient ruins, coves and sandy gravel. In fact it is so small that it does not show up on most internet maps, but you can find it on (website hidden) Earth. Previous generations did not have trouble finding it however, and it seems that some of the first inhabitants of the island were ancient Romans, as you can easily see the remains of settlements dating from the late Roman period in the crystal clear waters; old olive oil jars, amphorae, a Roman cistern. The island, according to mythology,was first named by the Knights Templar, Sovalye being an extraction of the French word for Knights- Chevalier, and The Knights Templar’s great rivals, the Knights of St. John were also active on the island. The remains of a crusader castle they built can still be found. Legend has it that Sovalye was also a base in the Middle Ages for rogue Knights who had become pirates.
There are a number of small beaches dotted around, and Sovalye's best beach is a 10-minute walk away from the apartments where the island also offers its only restaurant connection. There are no shops on the island and you need to go the nearest town Fethiye for shopping.
Transportation between the island and the town of Fethiye is through a water taxi service running four to five times a day during high season. Private sea taxi service is also available 24 hours a day for the short 10-15 minute ride.
Fethiye is known as the mythical Land of Lights, with sun almost 300 days a year, and a history dating back to 2000 BC making it rich in both natural and historical treasures, ranging from rock tombs to amphitheatres, ancient Greek and Roman ruins, sunken churches and castles, canyons and stunning coastal drives.
