Каде ќе бидете

Cumbria, England, Обединето Кралство

The caravan park is 15 minutes from Bassenthwaite lake.
Bassenthwaite Lake is one of the largest water bodies in the English Lake District.

As well as being within the Lake District National Park, Bassenthwaite has special protection as a National Nature Reserve. It's a really special lake for wildlife, home to ospreys that swoop down and fish from the water during the summer and many other flora, insects, birds and small mammals all year round.

It's a wonderful place for some quiet enjoyment, as there are no motor craft allowed on the water. Sailing, rowing, kayaking, canoeing, paddleboarding, fishing and swimming are all allowed on the lake. We issue permits for most of these activities, so that we have a good understanding of how and when people are visiting this area, and the money raised goes back into helping us protect and conserve the lake to benefit its wildlife.

If you want to visit Bassenthwaite and get out on the water, you will need a permit. You can buy a boating permit for any kind of unpowered pleasure craft. You can buy a fishing permit for shore or boat fishing. If you want to fish from your boat you will need both permits.

Please buy a permit online and keep a copy of the email permit you recieve, either digitally or printed out, so you can show it to our ranger patrols on your visit. Your email will also have a copy of the Bassenthwaite Lake map.

On the eastern shore, the Forestry Commission’s Dodd Wood is famous for its ospreys and woodland walks at the foot of Skiddaw, and you can also enjoy lunch at the Old Sawmill Tearoom, which I really enjoyed when I visited recently.

Mirehouse, a stately home situated on the opposite side of the road to Dodd Wood, is also really worth a visit. It opens on selected days, but the grounds and gardens are open every day, with adventure areas suitable for youngsters of all ages, and magnificent walks around the grounds and to the shores of Bassenthwaite.

On the western shore of Bassenthwaite Lake lies Whinlatter Forest, managed by the Forestry Commision, and England’s only true mountain forest. Here you’ll find walking and cycling routes and, for the really adventurous amongst us, one of two Go Ape centres in the Lake District.

On your way along the Whinlatter Pass from the village of Braithwaite, you’ll come across the Noble Knott car park on your left-hand side and viewpoint looking back over Bassenthwaite on your right. There’s often an ice cream van here, and it makes a stunning photo opportunity while you’re passing.

The caravan park is also 30 minutes away from Saint Bees Beech

Stretching out below the dramatic headland of St Bees Head is the mile long sand and pebble beach of St Bees

Stretching from South Head to Seamill lane, St Bees beach consists of a shingle bank which slopes down to an expanse of golden sand. The sand here is exposed at most states of tide except for a couple of hours either side of high tide.

At the northern end of the beach is a promenade that extends a towards the red sandstone cliffs in the central section of the beach. Beyond these the beach is backed by St Bees Golf Club

There is a RSPB nature reserve on Saint Bees Head which is home to a range of seabirds including guillemots, kittiwakes, fulmars and razorbills. You can also spot peregrines and ravens above the red sandstone cliffs.
