Bruny Island is a special place. A premier Island destination in Tasmania. A place to really relax, rejuvenate and enjoy the beautifully peaceful surrounds.

Bruny Island is approximately 100 kilometres in length and lies off the Tasmanian coast south of Hobart. It consists of two islands. The islands are joined by The Neck, an isthmus of land and an important habitat for Bruny's native wildlife, including a penguin rookery and surf beach.

North Bruny Island is drier and more suited to livestock farming whereas South Bruny Island is more mountainous and has rainforests and areas of heathland, which form most of South Bruny National Park.

The whole island is breathtaking. From wild seascapes, deserted beaches, sweeping surf, rainforests, native wildlife to tall forests and farmlands, Bruny Island is a very diverse and scenically beautiful place.

There are many beach and coastal walks, excellent fishing and rare birdlife and wild flowers to see. There are white wallabies, black cockatoos, seals, dolphins, parrots, sea eagles and more to see on Bruny Island.

Bruny Island has a permanent population of approximately 620 people.

Bruny Island is home to some beautiful local produce and premium quality wines. The produce ranges from fudge, chocolate, truffles and berries to cheese, fresh oysters, cherries, smoked products and more.

THE STORY OF BRUNY ISLAND
In 1773 Tobias Furneaux, who was exploring the coastline with Captain James Cook anchored his vessel named the Adventure off the Islands coast. Four years later on the 26 January 1777, Cook sailed the Revolution and Discovery into Adventure Bay and stayed for two days. His contact with the Aboriginals who lived on the island was amicable.

In 1778 Captain Bligh anchored the Bounty in Adventure Bay and planted some seeds. It is claimed that Bligh was responsible for Tasmanias apple industry. He returned in 1792.

Bruny Island and the waterway between the Island and mainland Tasmania, however, is named for the French Explorer, Bruni D'Entrecasteaux, who first explored the area in 1792.

Sunset Bay, Alonnah
Located at the southern end of Alonnah, Sunset Bay boasts the best sunsets on the Island. Popular for kayaking, fishing and swimming. Child friendly and great for romantic sunset walks.

Located at the Neck. A beautiful timber stepped boardwalk takes you to some of the most spectacular 360 degree panoramic views of the Neck.

Mayvista Nature Walk - 20 minutes return
Travel south through Adventure Bay and turn right onto Lockleys Road. Travel for 2.5kms then turn right into Resolution Road to Discovery Park picnic area and the start of the Nature Walk. This is an easy short rainforest walk.

Grass Point - 1 hour return
A flat track suitable for all ages. The track commences at the end of Adventure Bay Road. The walk continues along the beach and then follows the coastline to Grass Point. There are aerial views of Adventure Bay and Cape Queen Elizabeth. This walk continues to fluted cape.

Luggabone Circuit - 1.5 hour circuit
This walk commences at the Jetty Beach camping area, located off Lighthouse Road on the way to Cape Bruny Lightstation. Walk through to coastal heath, eucalyptus forest and back along the eastern coastline.

Walk commences at a 4 wheel drive track just north of Bruny Island airstrip. With spectacular views this is an easy walk within the Bruny Neck Game Reserve.

East Cloudy Head - 4 hours return
Access is from the end of cloudy bay road. The first 3 kilometres is along the beach with the remainder along a disused 4wd track. Parts of the walk are not well marked.

Labillardiere Penninsla - 5 hour circuit
Walk commences off old jetty road, signposted from Lighthouse Road, on the way to the Cape Bruny Lighthouse. Suggested route is clockwise.

Slide Track - 3.5 hours one way
This 10km track is for the experienced walker. It is better started from Lockleys Road as the road descends steeply to the abandoned wooden tramway, used to transport logs to Adventure Bay. Be prepared for all types of conditions.

For more information on some of these walks visit the Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife website.
