Dating from the 18th century and originally a farmhouse, Les Lauriers, has been carefully restored, retaining many of its period features. Beautiful oak beams sit astride exposed stone walls, the vaulted 6m ceilings give the reception rooms great space and dignity; the stone hewn fireplaces and natural terracotta tiled floors capture the charm and ambiance of how life was in this old building.
Accessed from a private road and drive and set in its own substantial gardens with mature Oak, Cedar and Acacia trees, the landscaping has been a particular interest to the owners ensuring privacy within the double planted hedging. Large terraces both back and front, allow guests to ‘soak up the sun' so that al-fresco dining can be enjoyed in sun and shade. Several dining tables and parasols are spread amongst the trees and flowering shrubs.
The private pool, surrounding tiled patio area and sun loungers are always enjoyed by guests with plenty of grass to play bat/ball games or perhaps a game of boules over aperitifs in the cool of the evening; new poolside lighting allows guests to swim when they like.
The House is far from the main roads, the few vehicles are mainly local tractors and locals on their way to the villages.
Les Lauriers is less than 10 minutes' drive to the medieval bastide town of Monsegur with its colourful Friday market and shops and restaurants under the colonnades in the square. The weekly night market offers food from France and North Africa. For those lucky enough to book first week in July have the opportunity to be part of the 3 day international jazz/swing festival in Monsegur. eat at the Mayor’s own restaurant or listen to jazz at the Colonnades.
The gently surrounding hills are characterized by vineyards stretching in every direction for which the Bordelais and Entre-Deux-Mers have become world famous; most local 'viniculteurs’ will be happy to show you around, you will be able to go away with a case or two of what you have tasted but at 'ex chateaux' prices'. Explore the renowned vineyards of St. Emilion, probably one of the most beautiful villages in France or drive on to Pomerol, the Graves or perhaps across to the Medoc.
You are invited to a long established family of wine makers, now in their generation Mickaël or one of his team will be happy to offer you a tour and provide a tutored wine tasting in English or French. Buy some of their outstanding red wines similar to those they supply to the UK Houses of Parliament.
You will be able to explore Duras, dominated by its towering 13th century castle or take a day trip to Bordeaux, in all its neoclassic-glory, one of the finest towns in South West of France, there you will be able to walk along the curving sweep of the promenades or take a boat cruise.
Almost every weekend, from June to Sept, there is a festival, night market, weekend event, endless kids entertainment, fairs, antique markets, food markets, music in the streets, sometimes based in a local Château – you'll look forward to coming back to the tranquilly of Les Lauriers.
Les Lauriers is approx. 40 minutes from Bergerac, 75 minutes from Bordeaux airport and 30 minutes from Libourne TGV station.
