There is so much to do and many places to go but here are some ideas:

-Marlborough is a lovely small town to spend at least half a day in. It has amazing restaurants, pubs and cafes. The Marlborough pub is great for cocktails and fantastic food and Rick Stein or Dans Place is great for a treat. It has many lovely shops and has lots happening such as the jazz festival (July), Marlborough College summer schools and concerts, and Marlborough mop in the autumn to name a few.

-Devizes, the other way, has a lovely little museum, Hillworth Park and café and Wadworth Brewery tours and tastings. It has lots of antique and vintage shops and some lovely restaurants and cafes; Sprout do great milkshakes and homemade cake and lunches; the Peppermill is a lovely restaurant and does great cocktails; the Vault for a huge variety of artisan beer and homemade pies; the Bistro which has superb naturally balanced food and has speciality nights; Jack Spratts in the Market Place opens in the evenings Fridays and Saturdays and cooks Spanish tapas which is great for sharing with friends and with a lovely view out of the window. It also has a very old sweet little cinema showing the latest films.

-Bath is about 45 mins drive west of us. It is a beautiful old city with so much to recommend. Firstly, for me, is the Bath Spa which welcomes men and women and is a lovely treat for a few hours using the spa water. People travel wide and far to go to the Roman Baths and see the architecture. The shops are worth the trip alone and it has over 500 eateries recommended on Trip Advisor. The wonderful Holburne Museum is free and a great way to spend an hour, also the Fashion Museum is great with lots of costumes to try on! The Pump Rooms are where people have been taking afternoon tea for centuries and frankly, there are better places but history is bought alive here (read Austin!). Sports fans will know THE place to go is Bath Rugby pitch in the middle of the city!

-Salisbury is about 45 mins drive south of us. The cathedral dominates the city and is a must to visit. Bishops Cannings, the next village, has a church based on Salisbury Cathedral because the Bishop of Salisbury owned everything in the area at one time and had his summer residence here! There is a lovely market Saturdays and Tuesdays and lots of little shops.

-Swindon is 25 mins east of us. It houses all the bad weather activities! Tampoline parks, ice skating, lots of cinemas, bowling, eat as much as you etc etc. It also has an excellent shopping outlet – Swindon Designer Outlet and a railway museum – the Steam Museum.

-Avebury is an excellent trip. It’s all run by the National Trust now and is great place to walk the dog and take the children as the house is wonderful and very interactive. There is a museum which is very interesting explaining some of the weird and wonderful sites you will see around here such as Silbury Hill and our longbarrows. Whilst in Avebury a trip to see West Kennet Longbarrow is a must as you can enter the chambers and it’s a lovely 30 minute stroll with dramatic views over the hills.

Lacock is a favourite place for us. The village is owned by the National Trust and is used in many films. It is exceptionally pretty and has a few tearooms – King Alfreds is good and in a very pretty garden, a very lovely jewellery shop - Watlings, Lacock Abbey in which Harry Potter was filmed and there are always lots of activities and events held here, also the Fox Talbot Museum of Photography. It’s about 20 mins drive.

-Most people head to Stonehenge which has improved in the past 20 years. Great museum there now and visitor parking as when I was a child you pulled up on the roadside and ran around the stones with no idea why we were doing it! We also have a very local henge in Marden which is being dug out as I write this! The Vale of Pewsey, after Germanica was lost to the Romans was where they grew all the corn and they now think it houses more Roman villa ruins than anywhere else. We keep looking with the metal detector but haven’t found anything yet!

-Bowood House is a great day out with a picnic. It has extensive grounds, beautiful house and lots to do with children including a brilliant adventure park.

We have plenty of pubs locally to recommend;

-The Bridge is the village pub and is popular for pub fare and there is a nice walk along the canal which is about 1.5 miles each way.
-The Crown in Bishops Cannings, again does pub fare and we use it to walk to with Percy and the girls for a bowl of chips, a pint and an excellent game of crazy golf – it’s a half an hour walk the quick way or just over an hour across the hills.
-The Kings Arms in All Cannings is a friendly pub with nice food and they also hold a music festival once a year (Kings Arms Rock Against Cancer) – it’s about an hours walk along the canal.
-The New Inn in Coate is about 45 minutes’ walk across fields.
-Honey Street Café is highly recommended and is further along the canal from All Cannings – a good few hours or 5 minutes in the car. The food is superb and all homemade and the cakes are out of this world! Good place for late brunch on a sunny day followed by cake! Also a lovely place to walk along the canal afterwards to walk off the calories.

Please let us know if you have any recommendations or places you wouldn’t return to so that we can pass this on to other guests. Thanks!
