First and foremost, Zaagkuilsdrift Bird Sanctuary & Lodge is a birding lodge; proudly and unapologetically so. Every aspect of what we do is designed around the needs of birders: late breakfasts, quiet surrounds, and strict no-noise and no-pet policies; all to protect the integrity of the floodplain and the experience of those who come here to observe, learn and connect with birds. We are a sanctuary in the truest sense: for wildlife, and for the people who value it.

Tucked between Pretoria and Bela-Bela along the renowned Crake Road near the Kgomo Kgomo Floodplain, Zaagkuilsdrift lies at the heart of one of South Africa's richest birding regions. With over 430 recorded species; including 11 South African endemics on the official area list; it is recognised as one of the country's most significant floodplain birding destinations. Nationally renowned for its exceptional warbler and LBJ diversity, the lodge is built around three purpose-designed hides; the Delta Hide, Sanctuary Hide, and dedicated Photography Hide offering outstanding close-range viewing in prime wetland and grassland habitat.

Recently named The Birding Lifes's Top Birding Destination and Accommodation Provider in Southern Africa 2026, Zaagkuilsdrift is not a general leisure resort, but a focused, conservation-driven birding destination where habitat protection and species diversity come first. Accommodation includes chalets, lodge rooms and simple off-grid campsites that preserve the quiet, natural atmosphere.
