Come with me and explore all the corners of my small-scale food forest. We live in a world filled with the tastes and textures of many foods that most people in the United States have never heard of. And we don't always know how to eat some foods that are oh-so-familiar. Did you know that you can eat broccoli leaves (and that they taste like broccoli florets)? I love to share what I know about these foods and how I grow them. Despite the numerous and voracious pests that call Florida home, I grow all this without herbicides or pesticides.

Twenty years ago, I planted some tropical fruit trees. Then I began looking into what greens would grow during our sweltering summers. Nothing from the supermarket seemed promising! I set out to educate myself and found subtropical vegetables that flourish over the summer. Only after the permaculture movement hit, did I discover that there is a name for what I had created in my backyard - a Food Forest. As my yard became more edible, I found that I had far more abundance than we could eat at home. About ten years ago, I started selling the surplus through the Sarasota Farmers Market. About five years ago, I embarked on a cross-country sustainable farm tour to visit farmers who engaging in sustainable practices. I shared the vision and practices from each farm on the GroundBreaking Roots blog.

Great experience! Diane sharing her knowledge of permaculture - while being IN her food forest - created a very unique learning environment. I walked away inspired.

What an incredible experience! Diane & Tom have created an amazing, diverse ecosystem on a 1/2 acre surrounding their home. Over 20 years of love & care have gone into building up the soil and tending to the trees, shrubs & plants. Diane was so kind and generous with her time and extensive knowledge. The food forest is a labor of love that has rewarded them with a bounty of delicious healthy food. This was a walking & tasting tour that was totally engaging. Diane sent my friend & I home with a bag of goodies. Tonight I made a vegetable curry that included cactus and unripe papaya. Tomorrow I will have a starfruit for breakfast & will make a key line pie with real key limes!

I’m a farmer and still learned SO MUCH from Diane’s experience and wisdom. I loved walking through and hearing her stories along with learn about exotic and indigenous edible plants along the way. I appreciated the openness to sharing and answering all the questions we had. I’m excited to cook up some goodies from the food forest tonight for dinner. Even if you are local, go visit this unique experience. Thank you so much!

Touring this urban food forest was a bit of magic in Sarasota. Imagine if everything in a lush, abundant, and spectacular forest was edible. I feel so fortunate to have shared some time with Diane in her garden forest. She was a wonderful host and incredibly knowledgeable. She explained how trees and plants grow in different climates and soil, as well as what time of year to plant various vegetables to make the most out of your backyard garden. Being from the northeast I had never seen mango trees, papaya trees, avocado trees, key lime trees, banana trees, fig trees, hibiscus plants or pineapple plants up close. And I still haven’t mentioned everything that was there. At this time of year, there were only a few tropical greens to choose from, but there were also arugula and kale. Together an awesome salad. There was some sort of delicious tomato plant that had a pit that I tasted, and I don’t like tomatoes. I was especially taken with the cactus paddles. I had thought you could only eat the fruit, but it turns out you can eat it all. To sweeten the deal, the star fruit was overflowing on the tree, and there were even bananas. I took some home with me for later. The garden was a delight for the five senses. If you like food and plants, this is a must see in Sarasota. I can’t wait to come back and tour her garden again in a different season as it was fun and interesting. I have a new friend in Florida!

Diane surprised us with a really fun experience of her magical garden. Diane's comprehensive knowledge was impressive & fascinating as we learned... not only about the plants & soil enhancement techniques... but, also ecological issues like Red Tide. It was inspiring and gave us lots of ideas for our own backyard. Plus, she kindly sent us packing with a bag of yummy fruits & veggies. We highly recommend this unique & intimate adventure near Lido Beach.
